Yoga nidra
Yoga nidra or yogic sleep provides deep relaxation in a short period of time, with some experts claiming its as rejuvenating as several hours of conventional sleep. But sleep and rest are different physiological states and we need both to disconnect from our digitally-distracted and dopamine-depleted brains.
Yoga Nidra is conscious relaxation, allowing the mind to watch the body. The goal is to relax with awareness allowing the mind to calm, emotions to resolve and the body to let go.
The benefits of yoga nidra extend beyond relaxation and include reduced stress, improved sleep, enhanced creativity, and physical and emotional healing.
Don’t worry if random thoughts pass through your mind or if you fall asleep. You are allowed to rest.
Find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed for 20 minutes. This practice is best done laying down on a bed, couch or a mat on the floor. Put a cushion or pillow under you head and cover yourself in a blanket to keep warm. If you like you can cover your eyes with an eyemask or headband and dim or turn out the lights. Please be gentle with yourself after the practice and take your time to come back to the present or if you are able, enjoy a sleep! I do stop speaking for a little while but then use my singing bowl to bring you back at the end.
